Dolphin Bycatch

Imagine being a dolphin and swimming with your family and then getting caught in a fishing net unable to break free. This is the reality of millions of innocent sea creatures each year. Simply put bycatch is any fish caught that fishermen do not want to catch. This includes dolphins, whales, sea turtles, sharks, seals and even sea birds.

Once a year in a normally sleepy little fishing village, Taiji Japan a horrible slaughter takes unfolds. Hundreds of Risso’s Dolphins, Striped Dolphins and Pacific White Sided Dolphins are hunted using a methind called dolphin drive hunting, where the dolphins are forced into a small cove.

Over the course of several months in the Summer of 2018, 97 whales consisting of 87 beluga whales and 10 Orca were captured and put into small pens in the bay of Srednyaya. All was going according to plan when news broke by local papers went viral of the whales being in danger of freezing in the ice.
